Residential Flooring

If you are planning a bathroom renovation, you may be wondering which of the residential flooring options will give you the best results. The good news is that there are very few options that aren’t suitable for installation in bathrooms. However, some are better than others when you factor in your budget, lifestyle, and needs. Here are a few things to consider that should help make your decision easier.

  • Tile – Tile is a popular option for bathrooms because this residential flooring won’t be harmed by the wetness and moisture. Go ahead and let the kids splash about in the bathtub without worry! Most styles of tile are also stain-resistant. However, that doesn’t mean there aren’t some concerns with tile. It can be cold during the winter for one thing, although that can be abated with radiant floor heating installed under the tile. It can also be slippery when wet, but there are slip-resistant options available.
  • Vinyl – The old peel-and-stick vinyl tiles are not a good option, as these do not hold up well in wet environments. However, vinyl sheeting and luxury vinyl tiles and planks are excellent choices. As long as they are installed properly, they’ll provide warmth underfoot more than tile, handle the water, and look great. The luxury vinyl costs more than the sheeting, but the result is almost indiscernible from tile or wood.
  • Wood/Laminate/Cork – There are concerns with putting some wood or laminate products in a bathroom. The newer products on the market can handle the humidity in the bathroom and some water, but a big leak is likely going to spell disaster. Cork is another popular choice because it is water-resistant and won’t easily grow mold or mildew, but it should be installed by a professional for best results.
